L'offensive alliée en Europe de l'Ouest commence avec le débarquement du 6 Juin 1944.
Ranville a été le premier village à être libéré en France lorsque le pont sur le Canal de Caen à la mer fut capturé intactdans les premières heures du 6 Juin, par les troupes de la 6ème Division Aéroportée, qui ont atterri à proximité en parachute et planeurs. Un grand nombre des pertes de la division ont été enterrés dans le cimetière militaire de Ranville et dans celui de l'église attenante.
Le cimetière contient 2236 tombes du Commonwealth de la Seconde guerre mondiale, dont 90 ne sont pas identifiées. Il y a également 323 tombes allemandes et quelques tombes d'autres nationalités.
Le Cimetière de l'église contient 47 tombes de soldats du Commonwealth, dont l'un n'est pas identifié, ainsi qu'une tombe allemande.

Dans ce cimetière reposent un certain nombre de soldats dont la grande histoire a retenu le nom.
Ici sont enterrés deux paires de frères, un soldat et son chien parachutiste, ainsi que l'homme considéré comme le premier soldat tué lors des opérations du débarquement.

Waypoint 1: Dans cette rangée sont enterrés les deux frères Eckert. Ils n'avaient pas le même âge lorsqu'ils ont été tués. Quelle était leur différence d'âge? (indice A)
Waypoint 2: Dans cette rangée sont enterrés les deux frères Rousseau. Combien de tombes les séparent? (indice B)
Waypoint 3: Vous trouverez ici la pierre tombale de Clifford Melbourne Oxtoby. Sa dépouille n'a pas été retrouvée après les combats, mais il est quelque part près d'ici. Quel âge avait-il? (indice CD).
Waypoint 4: Robert Edward Bobby Johns est le plus jeune à être enterré dans ce cimetière. Quel âge avait-il? (indice EF).
Waypoint 5: Emile Servais Corteil a été pris sous le feu d'un "tir ami" lors d'un mitraillage par des Hawker Typhoons ayant pris son unité pour une patrouille ennemie. Plusieurs soldats ont été tués lors de cet incident, ainsi que le chien qui avait accompagné Emile depuis l'Angleterre. Emile et son chien reposent dans la même tombe. Combien de lettres composent le nom de ce chien? (indice G).
Waypoint 6: Den Brotheridge est considéré comme le premier soldat allié tué lors des opérations du débarquement. Il a été touché lors de l'opération Tonga, alors qu'il participait à l'assaut du pont Pegasus. Combien de lettres composent le dernier mot gravé sur sa tombe? (indice H).

The Allied offensive in north-western Europe began with the Normandy landings of 6 June 1944.
Ranville was the first village to be liberated in France when the bridge over the Caen Canal was captured intact in the early hours of 6 June by troops of the 6th Airborne Division, who were landed nearby by parachute and glider. Many of the division's casualties are buried in Ranville War Cemetery and the adjoining churchyard
The CEMETERY contains 2,236 Commonwealth burials of the Second World War, 90 of them unidentified. There are also 323 German graves and a few burials of other nationalities.
The CHURCHYARD contains 47 Commonwealth burials, one of which is unidentified, and one German grave.
