Santa Catarina de Alexandria
Virgem, Doutora e Mártir; Padroeira dos Livreiros. Celebrada dia 25 de Novembro. Esta Santa tem como atributos uma espada e a roda de despedaçamento ou roda de Santa Catarina.
Viveu no séc. III, durante as perseguições aos cristãos. Era oriunda de uma família abastada, tendo decidido consagrar a sua vida a Cristo. Viveu entre os anos de 287 e 305 DC.
O Imperador romano Maximino ao tomar conhecimento da eloquência de Catarina, mandou vir de Alexandria os mais hábeis retóricos para lhe fazer frente. Enquanto Catarina se defrontava com estes doutores da retórica, surgiu um anjo que lhe deu ânimo e dizendo-lhe que não só venceria este desafio como também faria dos seus oponentes cristãos e mártires. Assim sucedeu, tendo conseguido pelas suas palavras sábias converter estes ateus a cristãos. O Imperador ficou tão furioso, que ordenou que os doutores fossem queimados vivos, tornando-se assim mártires, tal como profetizara o anjo.
Maximino enfeitiçado pela beleza de Catarina, disse-lhe que se renunciasse à fé cristã, não só lhe perdoava como faria dela Imperatriz. Catarina recusou a proposta e o Imperador ordenou então que ela fosse açoitada com varas e presa numa masmorra, condenada a morrer de fome. Nessa noite foi visitada por anjos que curaram as suas feridas e foi alimentada por uma pomba.
Alguns dias depois o Imperador visitou-a, furioso por esta estar bem, mandou que fosse torturada. Mandou construir quatro rodas com pregos, que rodando desencontradas despedaçariam o seu corpo.
Quando se preparavam para fazer funcionar o maquinismo, apareceu um anjo que despedaçou as rodas, atingindo os assistentes. Por fim o Imperador ordenou que Catarina fosse degolada. Depois de morrer os anjos transportaram o seu corpo até ao Monte Sinai, onde foi sepultada.
St. Catherine of Alexandria

Catherine refused the proposal and the Emperor then ordered her to be beaten with sticks and locked in a dungeon, condemned to die of hunger. That night she was visited by angels who healed his wounds and she was fed by a dove.
A few days later the Emperor visited her and Catherine was tortured. Four wheels with nails were made for the punishment.
When the machinery was put in movement, an angel came and broke the wheels. Finally the emperor ordered that Catherine was beheaded. Her body was after carried by angels to Mount Sinai, where she was buried.
