Geocache Description:


This geocache is located at the northern trailhead of the Hanging Rock Battlefield Trail. You will find a monument along with historical information here. You are looking for a small cylinder, 3 inches(8 cm) long, covered in black tape. Watch for muggles, especially those returning from a walk. Congrats to becka3315 for FTF. The trail itself is 1.7 miles long (each way; not a loop), and is primarily a pleasant walk, and not really a scenic destination. Even if you do not walk the trail, at least take a moment to check out the area of the creek, bridge, and bench just a few steps from this trailhead. From there, the main trail crosses the creek and then continues from the other side of the parking lot. A much shorter, but more rugged and perhaps more scenic, trail starts from the bench area and runs along the creek to I-81. Opened in 1999, the Hanging Rock Battlefield Trail is associated with Virginia's Civil War history. This northern trailhead here at Hanging Rock was the site of Hunter's Raid where, in 1864, General John McCausland's Confederate forces attacked the retreating Union army under the command of General David Hunter.
