This mural contains information about the corner where it is located....please take a moment to read and enjoy. These murals have been placed in Delhi by a dedicated group of volunteers who have a love for a town and would like to share with others.
Delhi was first known as the Hamlet of Soverigns or Sovereens Corners settled by the Sovereign family in the early 1800s. When Frederick Sovereign laid out a townsite in 1828 he called the place Fredericksburg but that name was in use elsewhere and the post office chose the name Middleton. In 1832, the first postmaster, Robert Decow, renamed the town Delhi from the capital city of India where their pronunciation is "Delli" while we pronounce it "Delhigh" Note: In the Norfolk County Atlas of 1877 called Delhi - Fredericksburg. In 1872, the airline railway arrived, which later became The Grand Trunk Railway & their "system brochure" (issues 1907) called their first station Delhi that was built in 1880. Stop into the nearby cheese shop and say hi to Teresa......she knows about the cache and would be thrilled to chat.
Congrats to geoffval on FTF!!
