This Pioneer Cemetery is situated at the eastern end of an ancient Native portage from the Canaan River to the Petitcodiac River. This area became the first trading center in the western end of Salisbury Parish. It eventually became known as Humphrey's Corner. Around 1836 the stage coach run from Saint John had an over night stop here at Holstead's Inn and tavern before continuing the trip on to Amherst. The burial ground was on land next to an early church. The settlement also had a school, post office, store, blacksmith shop, carpenter shop, and several homes. The local farmers objected to the European and North American Railway running through their cleared land so the railway line was located south of the Petitcodiac River in 1860 and that signalled the demise of Humphrey's Corner when even the church was dismantled and moved to the Petitcodiac 'Station' now the Village of Petitcodiac.
