Un fossile est une trace de vie passée, le plus souvent conservée dans des roches sédimentaires, ce peut par exemple être un être vivant (plante ou animal) dont l'organisme après sa mort a été confronté à des conditions spécifiques qui ont transformé ses tissus en minéraux.
