Місяць — єдиний природний супутник планети Земля. Другий за яскравістю об'єкт на земному небосхилі після Сонця і п'ятий за величиною природний супутник планет Сонячної системи.
Станом на 2017 рік — перший і єдиний позаземний об'єкт природного походження, на якому побувала людина.
Середня відстань між центрами Землі і Місяця — 384 400 км.
Фази Місяця
Місяць не самосвітне тіло, як і всі планети. Спостерігати його можна лише тому, що він відбиває світло Сонця. Місяць завжди освітлюється Сонцем лише з одного боку, але земний спостерігач у різний час бачить освітлену половину під різними кутами. Місяць змінює свою видиму форму, і ці зміни називають фазами. Фази залежать від відносного розташування Землі, Місяця й Сонця.
Молодик — фаза, коли Місяць перебуває між Землею і Сонцем. У цей час він невидимий для земного спостерігача.
Повня — фаза, коли Місяць знаходиться в протилежній точці орбіти, і його освітлена Сонцем півкуля видима земному спостерігачеві повністю.
Проміжні фази — положення Місяця між молодиком і повнею, коли земний спостерігач бачить більшу або меншу частину освітленої півкулі, їх називають чвертями.

The Moon
The Moon is Earth's only natural satellite. It is one of the largest natural satellites in the Solar System, and, among planetary satellites, the largest relative to the size of the planet it orbits (its primary). It is the second-densest satellite among those whose densities are known (after Jupiter's satellite Io).
The average distance between the centers of the Earth and the Moon is 384,400 km.
The Moon Phases
When the Sun and Moon are aligned on the same side of the Earth, the moon is "new", and the side of the Moon facing Earth is not illuminated by the Sun. As the moon waxes (the amount of illuminated surface as seen from Earth is increasing), the lunar phases progress through new moon, crescent moon, first-quarter moon, gibbous moon, and full moon. The moon is then said to wane as it passes through the gibbous moon, third-quarter moon, crescent moon and back to new moon. The terms "old moon" and "new moon" are not interchangeable. The "old moon" is a waning sliver (which eventually becomes undetectable to the naked eye) until the moment it aligns with the sun and begins to wax, at which point it becomes new again. Half moon is often used to mean the first- and third-quarter moons, while the term 'quarter' refers to the extent of the moon's cycle around the Earth, not its shape.
