Geocache Description:

Located in Letchworth State Park near the Castile entrance. This cache is near many popular picnic sites with ample parking. A camera is a must. Aside from a camera, the next best must is a picnic lunch. There is much going on in the area especially after late May until early September. For more information about the park visit “www.letchworthpark.com” or call the visitor center (716) 493-3600.

In the winter months (Early November to late April) this box is pulled for safety reasons. While there is snow or ice on the ground, that area of the park is closed to the public and very dangerous. Roads are often blocked off as this area is neither plowed nor maintained for winter use. In the summer months don’t let the topographic maps misguide you to the east side of the park. The best place to start is the south swimming pool parking lot on the west side at N 42° 35.360 - W 078° 00.662. The terrain is a maze of well-traveled trails and involves climbing many steps. You will find that you have to walk away from the goal to get to the trail to the cache. You don’t have to worry about taking the wrong trail as long as you do not venture beyond the well- marked “Restricted Area” signs. The general area is safe. However, wandering into areas designated off limits is not only unsafe but can result in fines as it is patrolled year around. Very near the parking lot there are swings, slides, open fields, picnic tables and a snack bar. Once there you'll want to spend a day. The scenery is "gorge"-us. It is a great place to take a sweetheart, a family with kids or even by yourself with a good book (or GPS). The walk is a bit long for a 5 year old (about ¾ mile in and ¾ mile back), with plenty of stone stairways to climb but, if you plan ahead with younger ones you can split-up into groups with one watching the kids as the other hunts. The cache is a 50 cal ammo box with a logbook and goodies to exchange. I’m sorry - no camera. And if you don’t have yours you’ll be sorry too. The goodies are great but the West to East adventure of the hunt and the sites along the way are the real treasure.
