St Stephen’s is the smallest of five Victorian churches designed by the celebrated local architect John Middleton, built between 1873 and 1883 to serve the residents of Tivoli. It’s thought that Middleton offered his work on the project for free, but even so, it was a struggle to get together enough funding to build it. Like many such churches, it was funded by subscription; the chancel was begun in 1873 but it took until 1881 – plus a second subscription – to scrape together enough money to complete it. It was consecrated in December 1883 and could seat 650 people. Its design is in John Middleton’s trademark Gothic Revival style with heavy rusticated stone to simulate a medieval look. The original vision for the church included a tower, but this was never built. It is, however, a beautiful church in a lovely area.
