How Geocaching Works

Please note Use of geocaching.com services is subject to the terms and conditions in our disclaimer.

Geocache Description:

You are invited to a Geocaching event, held at Glen of Aherlow Caravan and Camping Park, in the beautiful Glen of Aherlow, which will take place on the evening of Saturday 20th of August, starting at 7pm and will last until at least 9pm. The event is open to all, whether camping (be it canvas or metal), staying in a nearby hotel/guest house or to day visitors.

Geocaching in the Burren

The camp site is a fairly large sized site in the heart of the Glen of Aherlow, nestling in the foothills of the Galtymore mountain range. We will have a separate area set aside for us for the weekend. Electrical hookup is available for caravans, camper vans and tents (as long as you have an approved safety EHU unit especially made for camping). There is an indoor camper's room and there is free WiFi available throughout the site.

You will need to book directly through the camp site, whose web site is listed above. When booking please tell them you are coming to the "Geocaching event". They would like to know roughly how many are coming so that they can set aside an appropriately sized area for us in advance. Let them know also if you require Electrical Hook Up or other specific requirements - EHU will be available in the allocated area. Could you please also state in your Will Attend log if you're camping, caravan or day visiting - and also the number in your group.

If camping is not your thing, there are a number of nearby hotels and B&Bs that may still be available for booking.

As already alluded to, the scenery in the immediate area is spectacular, with stunning mountain scenery overlooking the northern edge of the Galtymore mountain range. The Galtees are Ireland's highest inland mountain range, taking the form of a high ridge which rises up almost sheer from the surrounding plain. The highest peak is Galtymore, which rises to 917 m (3,009 ft). Two major periods of glaciation affected the area. The rounded summits of the Galtees were formed due to the higher parts of the Galtees being above the ice. The constant freeze-thaw action on the higher rocks gradually wore these down to form the stony, scree covered summits we have today. Glacial action also formed cirques on the higher slopes, which are now occupied by 5 corrie lakes. This makes this location ideal for hill walkers of both of moderate and advanced levels of expertise!

Note also that the Galtymore range have a number of geocaches that are quite rare in the Jasmer challenge caches...

Nearby, there are a number of well known tourist attractions (all of which have associated caches!). There's The Rock of Cashel which was the traditional seat of the kings of Munster for several hundred years prior to the Norman invasion. More recently the rock is the site of a large cathedral, now in ruin after it was sacked by English Parliamentarian troops during the Irish Confederate Wars in 1647.

Other attractions nearby include Mitchelstown Cave, Swiss Cottage and the Vee Pass. There is a tourist information office (Fáilte Ireland) within a minute's drive from the camp site.

Barbecues are allowed – though site rules prohibit any barbecues or fires that damage the grass. Please bring your own food / refreshments for the event - there are no shops within walking distance of the camp site. Also, you're encouraged to bring your own seating arrangements .

If the weather turns inclement we can make use of the site's camper's room or possibly retreat to a nearby pub (about 10 minutes walk from the camp site).

If you've never been camping before, a Geocaching camping event is the perfect introduction to the "great out-doors" experience. I'd never been camping until I was encouraged to stay at the annual South Wales camping event in 2008, held in Swansea. A small tent isn't that expensive a purchase these days and in the summer months you need little else other than perhaps a torch, a matress and some bedding.

Name Plaques

As with last year, I plan to provide caching name plaques for all teams camping on-site. Please let me know in your "will attend" log the exact wording/spacing/capitalization of your team name as you'd like it presented. If you don't, don't worry - I'll use your exact caching name as used by Geocaching.com.

Official Geocamping Event Trackable

For the first time this year, I have commissioned an event trackable item made a double sided dog tag). It will not be exclusive to the event attendees but I also hope to set up some sort of competition where the trackables can take part in a "race" of some sort over the following year...

Satellite Events

As in previous Geocamping Ireland events, I hope to have at least satellite events nearby during the weekend. This year there are three satellite events! These are:

Meet & Greet at the Coach Road Inn

Over the last couple of years, it was clear to me that most people were arriving in the area (whether camping or staying over in a nearby hotel) and were there by the Friday evening of the weekend, so this year, there is a meet & greet event in the nearby Old Coach Road on the Friday night (about 5-10 minutes walk from the camp site). This will give us a better point of focus for us to meet, plan and of course get to know each other. We may well also have a larger contingent coming from mainland UK this year, from what I've heard, so there may well be a lot of new faces at the events.

The Saturday Expedition Event:
Boat trip to Holy Island, Lough Derg

Like in previous years, this outing involves a boat trip (though not nearly as long or expensive as the previous expeditions), an ancient Celtic and monastic site on an island - and of course plenty of craic, not to mention a rather sought after high d/t Ireland challenge Geocache! Unlike previous years, you have a choice of how to get out onto the island (a much shorter crossing than previous years too).

Sunday Morning event: Galtee mountain trail CITO

A CITO event with a difference, I hope. I've met up with the local Failte Ireland group who are happy to facilitate us with a CITO event that may involve a light hill-walk too. But don't worry if this isn't for you, ther nearby car park area which is almost flat is also in need of some litter-picking.

Of course, none of the weekend's events are compulsory and I venture that a few will have their sights set on some of those more illusive, but sought after caches up on the Galtees themselves!
