Geocache Description:

St Martin’s Church is situated in south Bristol, on the main A37 road leading out of the city. The church was designed and built by the architect Venn Gough (who also designed the iconic Bristol landmark of Cabot Tower) and was dedicated on St George’s Day 1901, although it was not finally completed until 1940.

Described when first built as “severely plain to economise costs” the walls are of grey Pennant stone, the roof is red tiles and the floor is wooden blocks. This description does the church less than full justice, as it has a number of attractive architectural features, the main one being its internal, wooden barrel-vaulted roof, often described as a “reverse boat,” as well as some interesting stained glass windows; including one by Arnold Wathen Robinson, a renowned local designer.

The Nave, complete with pillars separating south and north aisles, is light and airy with seating now for just over 300 people. A Portable Nave Altar sits on a raised and carpeted platform at the head of the centre Aisle. On the south side of the Chancel is a peaceful Lady Chapel which seats approximately 20 people and is used for weekday services and the 8.30am Eucharist on a Sunday
