A história Faialense decorre da seguinte forma:
Há muito tempo atrás, muito antes de existirem comboios no Faial, um professor Japonês vivia no Norte da ilha. Vamos chamá-lo Doctor-San. Este professor era um grande amante de animais. Ele tinha gatos, coelhos, patos, uma vaca e era muito amigo deles todos. Num bom dia, o professor abriu a sua porta para ir trabalhar (ele saía muito cedo de manhã para o seu trabalho como vulcanologista na Ilha do Pico) e, à sua entrada sentava-se um cão. Era um animal muito bonito e o professor dicidiu ficar com ele, chamando-o the Hachi. Nesse dia, Doctor-San estava atrasado para o trabalho, e enquanto trabalhava, não conseguia deixar de pensar nas coisas que tinha de fazer. Nessa noite em casa, o professor acendeu a lareira, a sua mulher fizera uma maravilhosa refeição de sushi. Com o cão sentado ao seu colo, a família jogou um jogo de Go. A sua mulher, chamda Ichi, também adorava cães. Todos os dias, quando o professor trabalhava, ela levava o cão para um passeio. Um dia, ao fim da tarde, ela queria dar um passeio, mas não encontarva o cão. Ela procurou nas imediações da casa mas não o conseguiu encontrar. Ela pensou que o cão teria voltado do sítio de onde viera. A filha do professor, Kyu, chorava. No pouco espaço de tempo que estiveram juntos, ela começou a amar aquele cão imensamente. Cerca de duas horas depois, o professor chegou a casa... Hachi. Parece que o cão tinha seguido o professor no seu caminho até ao cruzeiro para a Ilha do Pico e esperou até ao regresso do professor. Todos estavam muito felizes e enquanto o Sol se punha no Oeste, com as suas fantásticas cores no céu, pelo qual a Ilha do Faial é conhecida. A família teve uma noite muito boa com uma data de animais, deitando-se às zeros horas dessa manhã, e como todas as noites, um dos seus gatos, chamado Ni, dormiu na cama com o professor e a sua mulher. A partir desse dia, Hatchi caminhava até ao terminal do cruzeiro todos os dias para esperar pelo regresso do porfessor do seu trabalho na Ilha do Pico.
Num trágico dia, um colega do professor, Doctor Shi, chegou a casa deste. Ele disse à mulher do professor que este teve um ataque cardíaco e morreu. Ichi ficou de rastos. Ela amou imenso o professor e agora tinha que seguir sozinha. Porém, Hachi continou a ir ao terminal todos os dias, esperando o regresso do professor. Após um ano, a mulher do professor tambem morreu de desgosto.
Kyu, a filha, mudou-se para longe da casa e comprou uma pequena habitação no cimo dos montes do Faial, levando consigo o cão. Contudo, Hachi ia sempre para um ponto alto à espera de ver o cruzeiro a sair da Madalena, dirigindo-se então para o terminal, esperando pelo professor e continou a fazer isto até morrer uns anos mais tarde.
A Câmara Municipal decidiu numa das suas reuniões, que devia ser feita uma estátua do cão à entrada do terminal, para relembrar a cada pessoa que a visse, o que significa amor e lealdade.

The Faialense story goes as follows:
A long time ago, long before there were trains on Faial, there lived a Japanese professor in the North of the island. Let us call him Doctor-San. This professor was a great lover of animals. He had cats, rabbits, ducks, a cow and he was great friends with all of them. One good day, the professor opened his door to go to work (the professor left very early in the morning to go to his work as a vulcanologist on Pico Island) and at his doorstep sat a dog. It was a beautiful animal and the professor decided to keep it and called the dog Hachi. That day Doctor-San was late for work, and when at work, he could not keep his mind to the things he had to do. That evening at home, the professor lit the fire, his wife had made a wonderful meal of sushi and, with the dog on his lap, the family played a game of Go. His wife whose name was Ichi loved the dog as well. Every day, when the professor was at work she took the dog for a walk. One day, it was a bit late in the afternoon, she wanted to go for a walk but could not find the dog. She searched the premises but no dog. She thought the dog would have gone the same way as it came. The daughter of the professor, called Kyu, was in tears. In the relative short time she had started to love the dog immensely. About two hours later the professor arrived home with……..Hachi. It appeared the dog had followed the professor on his way to the ferry for Pico Island and had waited for the professor to return. Everybody was very happy and while the sun was setting in the west, with the great coloured skies for which the Island of Faial is famous, the family had a great night together with a bunch of animals and went to bed late at zero hours in the morning, and like every night, one of the cats called Ni slept on the bed with the professor and his wife. From that day on Hatchi walked to the terminal of the ferry every day to wait for the professor to return from his work on Pico Island. One bad day, a colleague of the professor, Doctor Shi arrived at the house. He told the professors wife that her husband had a heartattack and died. Ichi was devistated. She had loved the professor so very much and had to go on alone. But Hachi kept on going to the terminal every day to wait for the professor. After a year the professor’s wife passed away as well, she died of grief. Kyu, the daughter moved away from the house of her parents and bought a little dwelling high in the Mountains of Faial and took the dog there as well. Hachi however went to a high look-out every day and when he saw the ferry leaving from Madalena he went down to the terminal to wait for the professor and he kept on doing so until he died some years later.
The City Council decided in her latest meeting that a statue of this loyal dog should be erected opposite the entrance of the terminal to remind every person that sees it what love and loyalty mean.
