Geocache Description:

A simple off-set multi at Upton Church, which is part of the Churn Benefice, which includes several nearby villages. You will need to gather several pieces of information, use them to calculate the cache location, then take a short walk to the site.

The parish church of Upton is dedicated to St Mary the Virgin, and mostly dates from the eleventh or twelfth centuries, and though a major restoration took place in 1885 and the roof was recently restored, the church has not changed much in almost a millennium.

The south door still has a 12th century Vandyke pattern around the arch. The font, by the south door, is probably as old as the church. One of the most imposing features of the church is the chancel arch, of a simple 12th century semicircular design. There is a chamber organ, parts of which date from the seventeenth century.

The published co-ordinates will take you to the South Porch of St Mary's.

First look at the stone arch above the south entrance. The Vandyke pattern is the zig-zag lines around the arch. Some stones have a complete cycle of the pattern, which is an inverted 'V' at the top, and some stones just have half a 'V'. Count the number of stones with a complete 'V' and let this equal A.
Next, count the number of yew trees in the churchyard and let this equal B.
Then find the tallest tombstone in the Churchyard, under one of the Yew trees. This is a memorial to a girl who died in December 1863. Let the date in December equal C.
Now leave the churchyard and visit the cemetery on the east side. On a tall dark headstone there is the outline of Africa and India and a quotation from an Arab historian and geographer. Let the year of his death be DEF.

Now you can work out the cache location, which is 2 to 3 minutes walk by a public path.
It is at N 51 34. A (D-C) D,        W 001 15.(D-B-C) F (C+D-E)
