DE: Eine der grössten, mittelalterlichen Städte ist Freiburg im Üechtland, auf einem auf drei Seiten von der Saane umflossenen Felsvorsprung gelegen. Mehr als 200 einmalige gotische Fassaden aus dem 15. Jahrhundert verleihen der Altstadt den unvergleichlichen Mittelaltercharme.
Ein mindestens zwei Kilometer langes Mauersystem hat die Stadt früher geschützt. Davon sind Mauerreste, Türme und ein grosses Bollwerk auch heute noch erhalten. Am eindrücklichsten ist jedoch die Kathedrale von Freiburg mit ihren wunderschönen Glasfenstern. Sie wurde ab 1283 in Etappen gebaut, ist dem heiligen Nikolaus geweiht und besitzt einen 74 Meter hohen Turm, von dem aus man einen unvergleichlichen Rundblick hat.
Bei der italienisch anmutenden frühbarocken Loretokapelle befindet sich ein weiterer Aussichtspunkt. Vom Stadtteil Neuveville (Unterstadt) aus führt eine alte Standseilbahn in die Flanierzonen der Oberstadt. Die lebhafte Universitätsstadt Fribourg mit vielen Studenten aus der ganzen Welt ist eine kosmopolitische Minimetropole mit vielen Facetten. In den schmalen Gassen reihen sich kleine Boutiquen, Antiquitätenläden, Studentencafés und Restaurants mit lokalen und fremdländischen Angeboten aneinander.
Zu den besten Adressen für Kunstliebhaber zählt die "Espace Jean Tinguely et Niki de Saint Phalle", die in einem ehemaligen Strassenbahndepot untergebracht ist. Weitere Werke der beiden Künstler entdeckt man auf dem Skulpturenweg durchs Zentrum. Moderne Kunst zeigt die Kunsthalle Fri-Art. Kinder begeistert das Marionetten-Museum oder das didaktisch hervorragende Naturhistorische Museum.
Einen Ausflug wert ist die Abtei von Hauterive, ein 1137 gegründetes Zisterzienserkloster, einst auch Etappenort auf dem Pilgerweg nach Santiago de Compostela.

EN: Freiburg, nestled on a rock promontory, is surrounded on three sides by the Saane River. It is one of the largest medieval towns in Üechtland. Over 200 unique Gothic facades from the 15th century impart incomparable medieval charm to the Old Town.
Ramparts that are over two kilometers long used to protect the city in the past. Remnants of the walls, turrets and bastions are still preserved. Most impressive, however, is the Cathedral of Freiburg with its extraordinarily beautiful stained-glass windows. Construction started in 1283 and continued in several stages. Dedicated to St. Nicholas, it boasts a 74-meter-high tower that offers a fantastic panoramic view.
Another good viewpoint is the Italian-style early Baroque Loreto Chapel. From the Neuveville district (in the Lower Town), a funicular railway takes you up to the pedestrianised area of the Upper Town. Fribourg is a lively university town, with many students from all over the world, making this a cosmopolitan, multi-faceted mini-metropolis. In the narrow alleyways are tightly packed rows of little boutiques, antique shops, student cafés and restaurants, offering local and foreign specialities.
One of the favourite destinations for art-lovers is the "Espace Jean Tinguely et Niki de Saint Phalle", housed in a former tram depot. More works by the two artists can be found on the Sculpture Trail through the town centre. Modern art is on display in the Fri-Art Gallery. Children will love the Puppet Museum or the highly educational Natural History Museum.
It is worth making an excursion to Hauterive Abbey, a Cistercian abbey founded in 1137, and once a stopping place on the pilgrims' route to Santiago de Compostela.

FR: Située sur un éperon rocheux baigné par la Sarine sur trois côtés, Fribourg est une des plus grandes villes médiévales. Plus de 200 anciennes façades gothiques du 15e siècle confèrent à sa vieille ville un charme incomparable.
Un système de murs d'enceinte d'au moins deux kilomètres protégeait autrefois la ville. Des vestiges de murs, des tours et un bastion ont pu être conservés. L'édifice le plus impressionnant de Fribourg est toutefois la cathédrale avec ses magnifiques vitraux. Dédiée à St-Nicolas, elle a été construite par étapes dès 1283 et possède une tour haute de 74 mètres d'où on on a une vue panoramique exceptionnelle.
La chapelle de Lorette au charme italien du baroque naissant se situe sur une hauteur qui offre un autre panorama de la ville. Un vieux funiculaire relie le quartier de la Neuveville à la ville haute, riche en espaces où il fait bon flâner. Fribourg est également une ville universitaire animée qui accueille de nombreux étudiants du monde entier, formant un vivier cosmopolite très varié. Dans les étroites ruelles s'égrènent de petites boutiques, des antiquaires, des cafés estudiantins et des restaurants aux cartes locales ou étrangères.
Parmi les endroits courus par les amateurs d’art figure l’« Espace Jean Tinguely et Niki de Saint Phalle », abrité dans un ancien dépôt de trams. Un parcours de sculptures à travers le centre-ville présente d’autres œuvres des deux artistes. Le Centre d’art contemporain Fri-Art organise également de nombreuses expositions. Le Musée de la marionnette et le Musée d’histoire naturelle remarquablement didactique ravissent les enfants.
Une visite s’impose à l’abbaye cistercienne d’Hauterive, monastère consacré en 1137 qui servait aussi de gîte d’étape sur le chemin de Saint-Jacques-de-Compostelle.

To open it you should go to the coordinates N 46 48.064 E 007 09.960. You will find there a chapel, which is a copy of the pilgrimage church Santa Casa de Loretto in Italy. From the platform you have a beautiful view over the medieval town of Fribourg with the new Poya bridge in the background (see photo).
Answer now the following questions to open the lock back at the parking:
