Sweden´s first telegraph pole
In May 15, 1853 the Swedish parliament decided that the telegraph network would be built. Sweden’s first telegraph pole was raised in Märsta, between Stockholm and Uppsala.
The reason why the telegraph network was located in Märsta was the excellent location between the major cities Stockholm and Uppsala. From here, the network was developed to the two cities.
One hundred years later, in October 1953, on the place of the original telegraph pole, a Memorial in the form of a telegraph pole in bronze was inaugurated .
According to the Tele Cultural Veterans Memorial Association the monument is “also a tribute to the Swedish linesmen, who worked hard and under difficult conditions. They contributed to the expansion of Sweden’s telecommunications network.”
