STORY OF THE PLACE
The Emily Place is one of this amazingly interesting corners of the actual city of Auckland that without a little bit of research one could just miss it's amazing story.
On the early days of Auckland, when the city was just set by the slopes along the comercial bay, the actual Emily place would have been located on top of a prominent cliff at the mouth of the primitive harbour. St Paul’s, the oldest church in Auckland, nowadays located in Symonds Street, was firstly built on this privileged point as to show with pride what Auckland was about to become to all the sailors coming to the city.
But the needs of growth of the city couldn't manage to keep such a big cliff in the middle of the never ending reclaiming projects. And the cliff was scratched in order to make a more gentle slope conecting the end of the Princess Street with the new waterfront.
St. Paul church, as big as it was, had to be moved from it's first location and the new Emily Place was designed as we now know it.
Little Pohutukawas were growing in this new city square till they grew as big and twisted as we can see them nowadays. It has become one of many citizents favourites little corners, with this amazing trees hiding a monument among them: the place where the first St. Paul church was erected.
Work was almost finished on the memorial, only fours letter were missing for the final touches.... BUT!!! ups.... Guys!! We have made a mistake!!!!
