SAN ZENO IN ORATORIO
La chiesa di San Zeno in Oratorio, conosciuta anche come chiesa di San Zenetto, è situata vicino a Castelvecchio. Si tratta di una piccola chiesa romanica, distrutta dal terremoto del 3 gennaio 1117, poi ricostruita ed ampliata nel corso del XIV secolo.
La costruzione attuale sorge probabilmente su ciò che resta di un edificio romano sepolcrale. Assume il suo attuale nome nel XVI secolo mentre prima la chiesa era conosciuta come San Zeno Oratore o San Zeno Orante.
Secondo la tradizione, venne costruita sul luogo in cui San Zeno, Vescovo di Verona nel IV secolo e patrono della città, si recava a pregare. Inoltre la chiesa ospita il sasso di fiume sul quale, secondo tradizione San Zeno si sedeva a pescare.
Le testimonianze archeologiche d’età romana rinvenute nell'area di San Zeno in Oratorio sono molteplici e famose.
In età scaligera l’area venne riqualificata da Cangrande e nel 1336 San Zenetto è compresa nell'elenco delle chiese parrocchiali cittadine.
Nei secoli successivi, la vita religiosa della comunità che le si stringeva attorno proseguì serena, così come le vicende materiali della chiesetta: San Zeno in Oratorio si arricchì di numerose opere d'arte, anche se fu ancora costretta a subire qualche danno a causa delle irruenti acque dell'Adige.
Purtroppo, come accadde per molte chiese veronesi, anche San Zenetto fu colpita dal decreto di soppressione emanato durante la dominazione francese. Il suo territorio passò così sotto il controllo di San Zeno Maggiore, mentre la chiesa fu spogliata di tutte le opere e gli arredi che custodiva. Rimase chiusa dal 1807 al 1816 quando, per espressa volontà del Vescovo, fu riaperta come rettoria della parrocchia di San Zeno.
Dopo la traumatica esperienza della spoliazione, la chiesa necessitava di consistenti restauri, ai quali si dedicarono con impegno e passione i suoi rettori. Nel corso del secolo, per "riabbellire" San Zenetto si ricorse anche al recupero di dipinti, sculture, elementi architettonici provenienti da chiese abbattute o definitivamente demaniate, con il risultato di snaturare piuttosto sensibilmente l'aspetto originario della chiesetta.
San Zenetto fu nuovamente danneggiata durante la seconda guerra mondiale, ma peggio andò nel 1957, quando la navata destra della chiesa crollò, distruggendo così interessanti porzioni d'affresco di età tardomedievale, una delle quali raffigurante san Francesco.
Ciò nonostante ancora oggi la chiesa, a tre navate, conserva al suo interno tracce di affreschi di pregio: in particolare, sovrasta il portale d'ingresso una Crocifissione databile al XIV secolo. Per quanto riguarda le altre espressioni artistiche, notevole è la statua policroma raffigurante san Zeno: posta in una nicchia al centro del coro, essa viene fatta risalire al XIV secolo, ed è forse opera del celebre scultore Rigino di Enrico.
ENGLISH VERSION
The church of San Zeno in Oratorio, also known as the church of San Zenetto, is located near Castelvecchio. It is a small Romanesque church, which was destroyed by an earthquake in 1117, then rebuilt and enlarged during the fourteenth century.
According to tradition, it was built on the site where St. Zeno, Bishop of Verona in the fourth century and saint patron of the city, went to pray. Here there is also the stone on which the saint was sitting to fish.
The archaeological remains of the Roman period found in the area of San Zeno in Oratorio are many and famous.
During the Scaligeri age, the area was redeveloped by Cangrande and in 1336 San Zenetto was included in the list of parish churches in the city.
In the following centuries, San Zeno in Oratorio was enriched with numerous works of art, though it was still forced to suffer some damage due to the impetuous waters of the Adige.
Unfortunately, as happened to many churches of Verona, San Zenetto was also affected by the decree of suppression issued during the French domination. The territory passed under the control of San Zeno Maggiore, while the church was stripped of all the works and furnishings that guarded. It was closed from 1807 to 1816 when, by the express will of the bishop, it was reopened as rectorate of the parish of San Zeno.
After the traumatic experience of dispossession, the church needed substantial renovations. In the course of the century, to beautify San Zenetto paintings, sculptures, architectural elements from churches demolished or permanently demaniate were recovered, with the result of significantly altering the original appearance of the church.
San Zenetto was again damaged during the Second World War, but worse came in 1957, when the south aisle of the church collapsed, destroying portions of interesting fresco of the later Middle Ages, one of them depicting St. Francis.
Yet even today the church inside its three naves preserves traces of frescoes: in particular a Crucifixion dating back to the fourteenth century dominates the entrance. A remarkable polychrome statue depicting St. Zeno is placed in a niche at the center of the choir: it is traced back to the fourteenth century, and is perhaps the work of the famous sculptor Rigino di Enrico.
