History of St Matthews
Bridgemary estate was built after World War 11 in part due to the post-war slum clearance of Gosport. It was seen as a model for other local authorities. Whilst the estate was under construction the Church authorities negotiated with the council for land on which to build a church and provide a community amenity.
The present church building was erected to be the church hall, lying on a north/south axis. The church was intended to be on the large lawn area, but this never came to pass.
It opened in 1955, and was known as the Hall Church of Christ the King. At that time it was a daughter church within the parish of Rowner. The main door to the building was at the north end, with cloak rooms on the south west side; curtains and glass screens separated the body of the hall from the entrance corridor. There was a narrow sanctuary at the north end, curtained off from the body of the building except when in use as a place of worship. Temporary vestries were at the south of the building. The remainder of the hall, including the south end stage, was in constant use for community activities including clubs and as a clinic.
Pastoral care was in the hands of the Curates under the direction of the Rectors of Rowner. Bridgemary later became a ‘Coventual District’ with a Priest-in-Charge rather than a Curate, and the building was licensed for weddings. The church was re-dedicated to St Matthew, largely due to many members of the congregation had previously worshipped at the former St Matthew’s in Gosport. A bell from the old church is kept in the foyer of the church.
During the time of Rev Keith Parfitt, Bridgemary became a parish in its own right, with its own Vicar, and independent of Rowner. It was realised that the proposed separate church would never be built, so major rebuilding was under-taken. The temporary vestries were replaced with the current community rooms, whilst the west of the building was adapted to provide a vestry, lounge (now office), kitchen and toilets. The main entrance was re-situated in the west side.

This can be a very mugglesome area particularly at school start and end times so stealth will be required! You are looking for a silver megnetic tube.
