Geocache Description:

This little cache will take you to Halfway House Corners.

The hamlet's name was given due to an inn called the Halfway House that sat where the turning lane to Simcoe it now located. The inn itself acquired the name, because it was located exactly half the distance between Port Dover and Simcoe.  If you include Port Ryerse, you are also halfway to Lake Erie. The familiar and much loved landmark was first erected somewhere around 1850 or 1852. Over the years, 14 different proprietors ran the inn and at one point it was renamed the Derby House. The inn was quite popular and was a welcome stop for many a traveler over the years. In 1906 the inn caught fire and burned.

A new inn was erected on the site of the old that included a gas station but was not as ornate as the original building. It ran for many years, had good food and was a popular place for annual staff Christmas parties. When the intersection was redesigned in the 70's the second inn was not demolished.  It was relocated 300 meters north towards Simcoe on the east side of Hwy#24. It became part of the garage that still stands there today.
