Geocache Description:

This cache is part of the Auburn Geocaching Adventure 2015.  If you're participating in the Adventure, be sure to record each cache's code word in your series passport to verify your visit.

This cache is located in Auburn's Les Gove Park. Closest neighbor is aware of its placement and is looking forward to having more geocachers in the area after previous cache was archived back in 2008.

Located almost in the center of Auburn, Les Gove Park has many things to offer. A barrier free playground and sensory garden offers children with all abilities the opportunity to play on the equipment easily.  A rotary spray playground is there for you and the children to cool off during your summer caching in the sun from Memorial Day through Labor Day. There are Bocce and Horseshoe courts, outdoor fitness equipment, 1/2 mile loop paved trail, softball field, restrooms, and picnic tables. It also includes several building facilities such as a gymnasium, local library, senior center, rental building to hold large parties or other events, as well as the White River Valley Museum - which houses a rich history of the Auburn Valley. Scheduled to open in summer of 2016 is a brand new youth/teen center.

Please be respectful of the current construction site of the future Youth/Teen Center. THE CACHE IS NOT IN THE CONSTRUCTION ZONE, NOR IS IT ATTACHED TO ANY PART OF THE CONSTRUCTION SITE.

PARK HISTORY: Named for former Mayor Leslie J. Gove, who served from 1936 - 1946 and again in 1955 for only two months. Gove was Mayor during the time the park property was converted from undeveloped land to a housing development for war workers. When the property was approved for the development of a fifteen acre park in 1960, councilman Fred Towner was instrumental in getting the park named for Mayor Gove. Mayor Gove's family members were early pioneers in the area, who moved here in 1875. They farmed north of Auburn and put in the first water system in the area, giving them running water from a source on the West Hill to their back porch. The park was dedicated in 1966. The 20-acre park has rolling mounds and meadows with 100 cherry blossom trees given to us from our Japanese Sister City, Kasugo, Japan, which is now part of our newly formed city called Tamba, Japan.
