The Station
There were two stations in Monmouth, this one was the first station and was opened on the 4th of August 1873, but when Monmouth Troy was opened a year later it became the smaller and secondary station of the town. This station was originally a temporary station but ended up a permanent station until it's closure on the 5th of January 1959. It was built on the site of May Hill Wharf which was where goods were loaded onto barges on the river Wye
Also of note is the World War 2 pill box located just to the east of the cache by the small roundabout, easily identifiable as the low concrete structure with three embrasures (openings to shoot out of) facing the roundabout. Constructed in 1940 as part of the defensive fortifications for the rail-line, I believe this is now a Grade 2 listed structure.
The Cache
Cache is a magnetic micro attached to the last railing next to the old bridge and is basically the closest you can now get to where the old station used to be without going on private land. The cache is placed on the bridge for an easy find due to the fact that it is close to a busy little bit of road. Please replace securely.
