The building now housing the Museum of Taipa and Coloane History was formerly a public administration building, as recorded by a 1920 issue of the Macao Government Bulletin: “The Public Works Office announces invitation of contractors for the construction of the new Taipa Public Adminstration Building”. A decree issued by the Macao Government in 1992 included the current museum building – formerly known as the Municipal Council of the Islands – in the list of buildings of architectural value. The building has passed through the governance of Municipal Commission of the Islands, the Municipal Council of the Islands and the Provisional Municipal Council of the Islands; and its role switched to preserving and promoting the history and culture of Taipa and Coloane on 7 May 2006.
路氹歷史館昔日為離島的行政中心，在離島發展中扮演了重要的角色。當年由澳門工程公所負責有關工程招標工作，在1920年招人承建“氹仔新公署”。1992年澳門政府頒布法令將這座原海島市政廳大樓列入具建築藝術價值之建築物名單內。現在這博物館象徵了路氹政治的變遷，走過海島市議事公局、海島市市政廳、臨時海島市政局等時期，在結束其政治的角色後，於2002至2006年重修，在2006年5月7日轉變為保存路氹歷史文化的場館。
