Der Name der Kreuzbleiche führt auf das Bleichen des Leinengewerbes zurück. Früher gab es mehrere solcher Bleichen in der Gallusstadt. Sie verschwanden allmählich, als man Leinen mit Chlor bleichen konnte.
Die Kreuzbleiche fiel aber dennoch nicht dem Städtebau zum Opfer wie dies andere Bleichen ereilte. Denn bald danach war hier die Kaserne samt Waffenplatz stationiert. Aber auch diese Ära hatte ein Ende und der Waffenplatz wurde aufgelöst und nach Herisau verlegt. So war der Weg nun frei diesen Platz zu erhalten und ihn der breiten Öffentlichkeit zugänglich zu machen.
Auch heute noch ist die Kreuzbleiche eine kleine Naherholungsinsel unweit vom Hauptbahnhof entfernt. Sie wird von vielen Hobbyfussballern als Ausübungsgelände genutzt. Sie beherbergt in der Nähe ein Zeughaus sowie eine Sporthalle und die kaufmännischen Schulen. Auch das vor wenigen Jahren eingeweihte Bundesverwaltungsgericht kann man von hieraus erblicken.
