Geocache Description:

Situated near the Viking Way (only graded 1.5 because of a stile) - was originally on the Way

Situated close to where the Viking Way long distance footpath joins the Grantham Canal in the peaceful Vale of Belvoir. You can park in the Viking Way car park (layby) where there is a panel telling about the neighbourhood (N52 54.992 W0 45.030) or at the Rutland Arms (Dirty Duck) (N52 54.424 W0 44.904) and enjoy a 3/4 mile walk along the canal or along the cycle route on the former mineral railway track running parallel. Either way a visit to the Dirty Duck is worthwhile, the landlord must like it here as he has had the pub for 31 years! You can of course make a longer walk if you wish along canal or Viking Way or visit Belvoir Castle. If you take the canal to the geocache at Belvoir Lodge (GC17A0) the distance by winding canal is 13 miles, as the crow (or GPSR) flies less than 10. If you want to know more of the canal look at the Belvoir Lodge page where I have provided links. If you enjoy the Viking Way there are also caches on the Way at Viking Lamins (GCMQFQ) and Viking View (GCKK86).

5th March 2015. Today I have agreed to adopt this old cache in memory of the real CO, the Late John Stead who passed away in December 2014. Unfortunately, I did not have the privilege to know John but I understand he was one of the first cachers in the UK and as such a Charter Member. An article in memory of John, along with his photograph, can be found on page 5 of the January 2015 issue of The Seeker. His profile is shown at http://www.geocaching.com/profile/?guid=39022506-8c88-468d-8cda-7b88337a2a6a&wid=59354652-a8a5-404a-b930-b70add947213&ds=2

**** July 2016: Please note that CART (Canals and Rivers Trust) are conducting large scale works to renovate some of the locks on the Grantham Canal and the cache is within only a few feet of the fence to the compound. It is possible that there will be increased footfall in the area so please ensure that the cache is well concealed after you have signed the log. Many thanks. Also, whilst CART as an organisation are really supportive of geocaching, it may be that individual contractors, employees or volunteers may not be aware of this or of geocaching in general. If challenged please explain that it is a geocache and that there is a national agreement etc. Any problems please give them the cache ID and ask them to message me through the site. Many thanks. **** . *** Cache went missing, probably because the current works on Grantham Canal Lock 15 has made it somewhat vulnerable to casual observation - I have moved it to the other side of the track - the current container is about 1 1/2 litres so is a little smaller than the previous one - once the works are completed I hope that it may be possible to put a larger container back - no reply from the people doing the restoration so it looks like all the old log books have, sadly, gone. ***
