Geocache Description:

In Central Oregon stands an amazing rock formation called Fort Rock. Google it - it's awesome!  This isn't a volcanic "tuff ring" like that, but it is a rock, and shaped like some forts I've seen....

Drive as far up Archangel Road as your vehicle can stand, and then proceed on foot past the locked gate. Take the first right turn off the gravelly road/trail and angle up around the back of "The Monolith". You'll pass a pretty tarn and some mining ruins, and the trail continues up the valley in an easy, meandering fashion. A lovely, short waterfall sheets off slab rock as you follow the trail to the head of the valley. I know it's hard to hike with your eyes closed, but you'll want to try when you come to what USED to be the charming Lane Hut - now it's besieged by spray painted rock slabs and garishly decorated items. Very, very sad for those of us who have loved Lane Hut. So, eyes averted, cut left up the slope at the head of the valley. There is a faint trail you'll see come and go - try to follow it up onto a mossy bench below the towering ridge. There you'll  find an oddly squarish rock, with sides so straight they almost seem quarried. In front of it is a cairn, and the cache is tucked beneath it.

2016 update: I just hiked up to this cache, and was relieved/dismayed to find that dear Lane Hut has been put out of its misery - burned down, and all the debris gathered up to hopefully be removed. I hope at the same time some blessed soul will bring a sandblaster and clean the disgusting mess off the rocks too. Ugh. Sometimes it's painful to have to admit you are a person, and share that designation with some truly wretched creatures.
