Geocache Description:

The church is dedicated to St Mary and can be found in the centre of the village. The  War memorial is on the outer wall of the Churchyard facing the road. The metal plate, on which the names are engraved, covers the original stone base in which the names were first cut because this became very worn.

Much of this lovely church dates from the 15th century and is Perpendicular in design. Features from this period include its: tall tower, chancel arch and nave windows. Notable features from other periods include its:13th century south arcade, 14th century Decorated sedilia and 17th century communion rails (made by a local carpenter.

Only two windows contain stained glass, and most of this is merely in the tracery lights. What remains includes figures which would have originally been part of a 15th century series of the Nine Orders of Angels. There are particularly fine examples on display in the chancel south window.

Little is known about the rood screen, but has just two surviving painted panels. One depicts the Holy Trinity in the form of God the Father holding the crucified Christ while a dove descends. This representation is not that uncommon in medieval churches, but it is unusual on roodscreens.. The panel beside it depicts Mary and the infant Christ. The two panels were almost certainly painted in situ in the early part of the fifteenth century. Evidence suggests that at one time box pews were attached to the dado and dismantled possibly in 1898. Those parts of the screen which had not been thus covered by woodwork had been savagely maltreated before layers of brown were applied.

There is a medieval brass to Ralph Shelton which  is badly damaged, but that of his wife still survives. There is also a memorial to two  brothers who, died of smallpox. More moving still is a surviving WWI cross. These were the original grave markers on the battlefields of northern France, which were returned to the home parishes of the dead when more permanent memorials were built. There used to be thousands of these in English churches, but they in turn were mostly thrown out or given to families when the churches installed their own war memorials, and not that many survive today. What makes this one especially powerful is that it was varnished as soon as it was lifted, and the Flanders mud is still there, under the veneer.

You are looking for a small vial located outside the church premises.   You will need to bring your own pen.  Please be aware that muggles live in the house adjacent to GZ!
