Geocache Description:

A straightforward Church Micro located near to the parish church of Pelynt. The headline coordinates take you to the headstone William Maddever which is the first stage of this multi cache..

The Church

Pelynt Church is dedicated to St Nonna who was the mother of St david of Wales.
There are no signs of the original norman Church - most of what you see today dates from the 15 Century and from the restorations carried out in Victorian times by J P St. Aubyn - his love of boot scrapers can be clearly seen outside the porch door.
Sir John Trelawny - the famous Bishop of Exeter and Winchester - is buried in the family vault in the South Transept or Trelawny Aisle. The plate which was originally fitted to his coffin and the gilded pastoral staff carried at his funeral are now fixed to the wall.
There are a number of excellent carved monuments around the inside of the church - some exceptional slate carvings date from the 16th Century. One of special note is the Achym Memorial carved in 1589 - a year after the Armada. It is said that the strange facial expression suggests that he died of a stroke.
This church is well worth a visit if it is open.
