Leží v nadmorskej výške 1545 m. n m. v najväčšom a najhlbšom karovom kotli Doliny Bielej vody kežmarskej, pod najväčšou tatranskou stenou - stenou Malého Kežmarského štítu, prahmi Veľkej a Malej Zmrzlej doliny a Jastrabou vežou. 
Má rozlohu 1,770 ha, dĺžku 188 m a šírku 136 m. Hĺbka je 4,5 m. Na jeho piesčitom dne sú viditeľné vývery vody, ktoré v minulosti skúmali už žiaci Kežmarského lýcea pod vedením Juraja Buchholtza ml. V roku 1565 na Turíčny sviatok boli pri plese kežmarskí mešťania, doprevádzajúci hradné panstvo Laských. Tento výlet sa považuje za prvý turistický vo Vysokých Tatrách.
Z konca 17. stor. sa traduje povesť o mládencovi, synovi kuruckého grófa Thökölyho, ktorý sa vydal na Jastrabiu vežu pre “carbuncul” - drahokam, ktorý sa trblietal na jej vrchole. Keď ho mládenec dosiahol, blesk ho údajne zrazil z Jastrabej veže do Zeleného plesa, ktoré v tom čase siahalo až po steny veže. Mládenec i s drahokamom, zeleným karbunkulom, spadol do plesa a to od drahokamu získalo zelenú farbu. Gróf Thököly dal údajne prekopať časť čelnej morény, aby znížil hladinu plesa a vylovil telo svojho syna. V roku 1880 mal UKS hotový plán na obnovenie hrádze v čelnej moréne, nenašli sa však finančné prostriedky.
Dnes na moréne nad plesom stojí Chata pri Zelenom plese a vedie okolo neho červeno značený chodník časti Tatranskej magistrály na Biele pleso a žlto značený chodník z Bielej vody na Jahňací štít.

It is located 1545 m above the sea level in the biggest and deepest valley of Kezmarok's Biela Voda under the highest tatra wall – the wall of the peak Small Kezmarok at the borders of Velka and Mala Zmrzla dolina and Jastrabia Veza. It spreads over 1.770 ha; it is 188 m long, 136m wide and 4,5 m deep. At its sandy bottom, there are recognizable water springs, which were studied by the students of Kezmarok Lyceum under the supervision of Juraj Buchholz jr. In 1565 during the annual carnival, Kezmarok’s townsmen accompanied gentry of the castle – the Laskys to the tarn. This is known as the first tourist trip in the High Tatras.
17th century legend of a young man, the son of Earl Thokoly, tells a story of how he climbed the Jastrabia veza to grab the Carbuncle gemstone shimmering at the top. When he reached the top, a lightning stroke him down to a tarn, borders of which were as high as the hill at the time. The green colour of the gemstone is said to give the tarn its green colour and it’s been called Zelene pleso (The Green Tarn) since. Earl Thokoly reportedly dug up a part of the front moraine to lower the tarn level to be able to pull his son's body out. The plan for recovery of the dam in the front moraine was ready in 1880 but sufficient funds were missing to go forward with it.
Today, you can find the ‘Cottage at the Green Tarn’ located on the moraine. There are 2 hiking paths – a red-marked path of Tatranska magistrala leading to the Biele Pleso (The White tarn) and a yellow-marked path from Biela Voda to Jahnaci stit.
