Geocache Description:

St. John's Mill and Wildflower Garden

This cache was placed to mark the 6th. anniversary of the wheel's restoration.

The Mill from the garden showing the Tentering frame.

St John's Mill dates back to at least 1816 and it is likely that the central part of the building is even older. It was extended considerably in 1846 at which point the water wheel was enclosed to become an internal wheel. It was a fulling, or tuck mill, and although little production took place after the second world war, some drying and bleaching continued outside in the tenterfield until the mid 1970s.

Restoration plans were developed in the late 1990s as an ecumenical community project to celebrate the millennium. The mill was opened in April 2003 after 2 years of sensitive restoration work on the derelict building. After over 6 years of detailed planning and work-parties, the wheel, wheel pit and parts of the race were completely rebuilt and the original water wheel was carefully restored and completed on the 1st. July 2009.

The Mill is now a Conference Centre.

The Mill has an award winning wildflower garden, managed in association with the Manx Wildlife Trust. It is located next to the Mill and offers an oasis of peace and tranquility. The garden is also registered with the Quiet Garden Trust and is open daily. In 2009 work commenced on the restoration of a small woodland area on the other side of the river. This is linked by a footbridge to the wildflower garden and is where you will find the geocache.
