The area around Bickenhill church was designated a conservation area in 1977 and most of the older houses in the village are Georgian or Victorian. The Norman Parish Church of St Peter dates from 1140 but little remains of that period. It consists of a chancel, north chapel, nave, north aisle, west tower, and south porch.
Over the centuries many additions have been made, notably in around 1300 when the chancel was rebuilt, two lancet windows and a ‘leper’ window installed and a priest’s door inserted in its south wall. Late in the 15th century the North chapel was added and the West tower was built around the same time. The 17th century dates carved on the tower imply importamt alterations or repairs which may have been a complete rebuilding of the tower or the addition of the spire.
The church’s spire was struck by lightening in 1876 and rebuilt ten years later at a cost of £400.
Its most recent addition are the red flashing lights on the tower to warn incoming aircraft of its presence as Birmingham Airport is very close by!
