Ce multi vous emmène dans une visite intéressante de Éclance, et implique une promenade d'environ 2 kms , Si vous ne souhaitez pas marcher, tous les waypoints à l'exception de l'étape 3 sont accessibles en voiture .
Éclance est maintenant un petit village d'environ 100 habitants, mais il a un passé intéressant. Il ya encore beaucoup de preuves de la stature et l'importance du village en jours plus tôt.

Vous allez maintenant avoir entré le cimetière de l'église de St Brice, les parties les plus anciennes datent du XVIIe siècle. Sur le côté opposé de la route, vous verrez Chateau de Montricon. Le bâtiment à gauche est le château lui-même, et sur la droite, vous verrez les deux vieux bâtiments de ferme qui sont attachés au château, et un magnifique pigeonnier, qui a été récemment restauré.
Revenant sur les coordonnées de l'étape 7, vous serez à l'angle d'un bâtiment. D'un côté est le nom de la route, et de l'autre une plaque de métal vieille qui vous conseille qu'une certaine activité est interdite dans le département de la Aube.

This multi takes you on an interesting tour of Eclance, and involves a walk of about 2 kms. If you do not wish to walk, all the waypoints except Stage 3 are accessible by car.
Eclance is now a small village with approximately 100 inhabitants, but it has an interesting past. There is still much evidence of the stature and importance of the village in earlier days.
The earliest mention of the village dates from 856, when it was called “Saint Brice”, now the name of the church. It was later known as “Esclances”, a Gallic name meaning “clearing in the middle of the woods”.
The fame of the village derives mainly from its cheese making, which has a very long history. Back in 1217 The Countess of Champagne sent Eclance cheeses to Philippe Auguste, King of France from 1180-1223, which was a marketing ploy that was well ahead of its time. Thereafter cheese making continued locally, with as many as three cheese makers in the village at one time. The last of these, La laiterie Turin, closed in the late 1980’s.
The importance and wealth of the village is also indicated by the existence of two separate chateaux, with the curious fact that both are cut in two in a similar manner. However, at the end of your walk, you will see that one has recently been split further in a more dramatic and unfortunate fashion.

You are now standing outside the gates of the last surviving cheesemaker in Eclance, La laiterie Turin. The building to the right was the laboratory and workshop, and the one facing you was where the cheese was produced.

In front of you are the gates of the old fire station, which still houses much of the old equipment used at the time of horse drawn fire engines. There are two words carved into the stone arch above the gate.

You will now have entered the churchyard of the church of St Brice, the oldest parts of which date from the seventeenth century. You should be standing by the grave of Famille Dubuisson-Henry, of whom one member of the family, Alice, died not so long ago. The family themselves were tenant farmers, and Alice herself lived in the village from her early years until she died. She tended the cows at the farm, and the milk from those cows was used to make the cheese at La laiterie Turin, which you will have visited at Stage 1.

You have now reached the centre of an ancient wall, on the north side of the road, which enclosed land belonging to Chateau de Montricon. The stonemason displayed his craft by carving faces in the wall, and these faces can still be seen.

On the opposite side of the road you will see Chateau de Montricon. The building to the left is the chateau itself, and on the right you will see both the old farm buildings which are attached to the chateau, and a magnificent pigeonnier, which has recently been restored.
Returning to the co-ordinates for stage 7, you will be at the corner of a building. On one side is the road name, and on the other an old metal plate which advises you that a certain activity is forbidden in Department de la Aube.

You have now reached the second, and grandest, chateau in the village, Chateau d’Eclance. It is again split, with the main house to the left, and the “working buildings” to the right. Sadly the latter burnt down in 2013. The gates immediately in front of you are now classed as an Historic Monument, and were created by the same metalworker who was responsible for the famed gates at Stanislas in Nancy, although he used local labour for those at Eclance.
