About SideTracked Euston and Robert Stephenson


Euston was the first intercity railway station in London, opened on 20 July 1837 with 9 train platforms. Since then the station has been almost completely rebuilt. It now has 18 platforms, and Euston is the sixth-busiest terminus in London by entries and exits.

Few relics of the old station survive, but you can still see the lodges on Euston Road and statues now on the forecourt. One of the most prominent is a statue of the railway engineer Robert Stephenson, which now stands in the public area just outside the station.

Robert Stephenson FRS (16 October 1803 – 12 October 1859) was an early railway engineer. He was the only son of George Stephenson, the "Father of Railways". Robert built on the achievements of his father, with projects such as the early steam locomotive, Stephenson's Rocket. Robert Stephenson has been called the greatest engineer of the 19th century.

Although Robert declined a British knighthood, he was decorated in Belgium with the Knight of the Order of Leopold, in France with the Knight of the Legion of Honour and in Norway with the Knight Grand Cross of the order of St. Olaf. He was elected Fellow of the Royal Society in 1849. He served as President of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers and Institution of Civil Engineers.

Robert's death was widely mourned, and his funeral cortege was given permission by Queen Victoria to pass through Hyde Park, an honour previously reserved for royalty. He is buried in Westminster Abbey.

I'll be waiting next to the statue in the area near the picnic tables. I hope it'll be good weather, but if it does start raining I will still be there, just a few paces away under cover!
