Prior to the construction of the new Breakwater Bridge and Breakwater Road realignment West bound traffic would turn left at the intersection at Tucker Street and travel about 300m and turn right to go over the Breakwater Bridge and vice-versa for East bound traffic.
When plans for the new bridge were developed, houses here at this location were compulsory acquired along Fellmongers Road to make way for the widening for the intersection and also traffic lights located before the new bridge
At the time before demolition the Breakwater Residents Action Group voiced community concern about the VicRoads preferred route for the Breakwater Road bridge going down Fellmongers Road without proper community consultation and investigation into alternative route options. 1225 signatures of residents from essentially the greater Geelong region were collected who were opposed.
There were realistically two routes which had been examined by VicRoads. The first was the now VicRoads route of down Fellmongers Road. This had been the designated route for approximately 40 years. However locals were concerned about the compulsory acquisition of nine homes and divide the Breakwater neighbourhood. The other option was down Leather Street, which is essentially a street lined with industry. The disadvantage of this route in the eyes of VicRoads was the width of the road. Residents had also called for a more southern route but that would not service the local areas of Newcomb, St Albans Park, Whittington and other suburbs.
