Church Micro 7901...Rodmersham Multi-cache

This cache has been archived.

Gentabout: Time for this one to be archived, it has been out for a long time and has been replaced several times before but as it appears to have gone missing again it's time for it to go.

Maybe someone else will put a new CM here in the future.

Geocache Description:

St Nicholas Church Rodmersham

The magnificent Grade I listed St Nicholas Church in the pretty village of Rodmersham was started in the 15th Century and constructed out of locally quarried dark flint and stone. The church’s imposing tower is widely considered to be one of the finest examples of 15th Century tower building in the whole county coming as it does with a complete set of menacing gargoyles. Inside the church has been extensively modernised by the Victorians but here and there medieval workmanship can still be found.

In the north wall of the nave are excellent examples of doors to the rood loft, the top of each doorway having nicely shouldered arches. The most interesting parts of the church are the chancel and chapel. The former contains an excellent altar by Buckeridge and Hoyce (1888) and an east window of German glass by Bayer of Munich, dated 1881. On the south side is the excellent fifteenth-century wooden sedilia of three canopied seats - almost unique in England. It backs on to a contemporary parclose screen that divides the chancel from south chapel which contains two panels of blind Norman arcading and a good east window by Ward and Hughes. In the south aisle is a blocked low side window that probably served a side altar.
