Peasedown St John Methodist Church is one of four Christian Churches in Peasedown St John. As the non-conformist religion grew across the Coalfields in North-Somerset in the later 1800s and early 1900s it was visible in Peasedown St John, with not only this Primitive Methodist Chapel (now Peasedown Methodist Church) being founded in 1874, after local men quarried the stone for the church, but also Wesleyan Chapels in Braysdown Lane, a Baptist Chapel on Eckweek Road (now Zebedees Nursery School) and a Christadelphian Hall which still stands on Huddox Hill.
In 1889 the church required an extension and the trustees contributed their earnings as well as helped mine the stone again, along with the founders. In 1909 the first pipe organ was installed and in 1962 the building had a further extension, with a kitchen and offices being added.
In 2005 the church under went a reconfiguration and a vestry, toilets and two rooms added. Around 2006 the pipe organ that had been installed in 1909 but was now redundant, was removed and put into storage, waiting for restoration.
The church is very active in the community, holding children's clubs such as messy play, youth work, lunches for the elderly, drug intervention schemes.
Congratulations to Austin the Archivist on his FTF.
If anybody would like to expand this series please do, I would just ask that you could let Sadexploration know first at churchmicro@gmail.com so he can keep track of the Church numbers and names to avoid duplication.
