William Kelly Mabry, Veteran of the Civil War

Buried next to his brother is William Mabry. He was likely related to General Joseph Alexander Mabry, the visitor from Tennessee who won a duel in Tuscaloosa with Dr. William Archibald Leland, but was days later was stabbed to death by the same good doctor. (there is a cache nearby in this cemetery about these characters).

William enlisted as a Private in Company H of the 5^th Alabama. This regiment was involved in several major battles and lost many men on the battlefield and to sickness in camp.

The 5^th Alabama Infantry mustered in at the onset of the war with 1,719 men; at Appomattox only 4 officers and 53 men remained. The regiment engaged the enemy in battle at Manassas (Bull Run), Seven Pines, First Cold Harbor, Malvern Hill, Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, Gettysburg, Wilderness, Spotsylvania Court House, Second Cold Harbor,  Monocracy, Kernstown, Winchester, Fisher’s Hill, Cedar Creek, and was present at the surrender at Appomattox.
