Give a Fig Mystery Cache

This cache has been archived.

Lonely_Rooster: The original hiding spot has opened out from a pocket into a through tunnel. Unfortunately, no other suitable hiding location could be found near to GZ that would not significantly change the difficulty and terrain rating (and original spirit) of the cache.

Geocache Description:

The cache is not located at the listed coordinates. To find this cache you must (virtually) plant some trees then (physically) hug a tree.

Dystopia Sylvae

With increasing human encroachment into their habitat, destruction of Port Jackson figs (Ficus rubiginosa) has reached a point where very few remains. Under political pressure, councils and park administrators demand that the remaining figs be relocated; to be distributed equally to all parks and reserves.

A map of the twelve parks in the area is shown below. Each park is identified by a different colour. A survey found that only twenty-four Ficus rubiginosa are left. Therefore, you have been given the assignment to plant exactly two figs in each park.

To ensure sufficient nutrients are available to each tree and to avoid over-crowding, no trees are to be planted immediately next to each other whether up/down, left/right or diagonally.

Also, the town-planners have demanded equitable access to views for residents. So exactly only two trees are to be planted along any columns (North-South) and across any rows (East-West).

Fig-uring out GZ

Hopefully, the above account remains forever fictional. We can help by looking after our native plants and the environment.

And show your appreciation for the beautiful Ficus rubiginosa by hugging (you really must!) a wonderful example before engaging in the environmentally-friendly form of logging.

Once you've worked out how to plant the figs for the dystopian forest above, obtain the coordinates to GZ as follows:

  • A is the number of empty squares between the two trees down Column 10.
  • B is the Column number the left-most tree along Row 3 is on.
  • C is the number of empty squares between the two trees along Row 5.
  • D is the number of empty squares you'll cross before reaching the first tree when walking from bottom to top along Column 5.
  • E is the number of empty squares between the two trees down Column 7.
  • F is the Row number of the lower tree in Column 3.

The coordinates for GZ is  S 33° 54.ABC E 151° 14.DEF

GZ is less than 1 km from starting coordinates. Bring your own pen just in case. Heed the attribute and please only attempt if capable and confident. I do recommend visiting the starting location as there are some impressive Ficus rubiginosa specimens there. Read more about this beautiful Australian native here.

Congratulations to the dauntless and persistent Jendid, and nocturnal arboreal primate pk1965 for the FTF.
