La fondation Cartier pour l'art contemporain a été crée en 1984. C'est un mécénat d'entreprise de la société Cartier (le Joailler de la place Vendôme) qui commande des œuvres et organise des exposition temporaires d'artistes contemporains.
Elle s'intéresse à toutes les formes de création; peinture, sculpture, photo et vidéo, design, mode, son. Il y a une exposition majeure chaque année, et certaines - partiellement visibles de l'extérieur - ont laissé des souvenirs dans le quartier comme celles de Takeshi Murakami (2002), de Jean-Paul Gaultier et ses spectaculaires vêtements en pain (2004) ou Ron Mueck et ses sculptures hyperréalistes (2013). La plus marquante ^^ fut sans doute l'expo "Graffiti" en 2009 ou des graffeurs renouvelaient la façade de la fondation chaque jour durant plusieurs semaines.
Le bâtiment, crée par Jean Nouvel, est entièrement vitré et est également une curiosité. La fondation s'y est installé en 1994, après avoir détruit le vieux bâtiment de l'American Center (ou le groupe Téléphone débuta en 1976) mais en ayant pris soin de conserver le superbe cèdre du Liban planté par Chateaubriand en 1825.

The Cartier Foundation for Contemporary Art was founded in 1984. It is a corporate philanthropy organisation from Cartier (the Joailler in Place Vendome) which buy the works and organizes temporary exhibitions of contemporary artists.
She is interested in all forms of creation; painting, sculpture, photography and video, design, fashion, sound. There is a major exhibition each year, and some - partially visible from the outside - have marked memories in the neighborhood such as Takeshi Murakami (2002), Jean-Paul Gaultier and spectacular bread clothings (2004) or Ron Mueck's hyper-realist sculptures and (2013). The building, designed by Jean Nouvel, is fully glazed and is also a curiosity. The foundation settled there in 1994, having destroyed the old building of the American Center but taking care to preserve the beautiful cedar of Lebanon planted by Chateaubriand in 1825.
