This is the Harrogate Chapel of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints commonly referred to as Mormon. The Church has a rich history in the United Kingdom. The first missionaries arrived from the United States in 1837 and began their work in Preston. The first baptism took place in the River Ribble soon after. By 1850 British membership had risen to 30,747 members. As of 2014 there are 15 million members of the church world-wide; 188,281 reside in the UK in one of its 330 congregations.
Harrogate has had congregations of various sizes since 1851. This chapel was built in 1970 at a cost of 90,000 pounds, of which the local congregation contributed 10% along with much of the building labour. The building was enlarged in 2002 due to its increase in membership. There are approximately 400 members of the church in the Harrogate Ward.
