Zum biblischen Spruch
Quo Vadis? ist ein Spruch der vor allem biblischen Ursprungs ist, er ist im Johannesevangelium (Joh 13;37) bezeugt. Außerdem soll der Legende nach Petrus auf dem Wege nach Rom Christus begegnet sein und fragte ihn "Domine quo vadis?" (Herr, wohin gehst du?) - und erhielt zur Antwort "Romam venio iterum crucifigi" (Nach Rom geh ich um erneut gekreuzigt zu werden) - woraufhin Petrus sofort umkehrte und in Rom gefangen genommen wurde und eben dieses Schicksal erfuhr.
Auf dieses Geschehnis aus den apokryphen Petrusakten bezieht sich auch der 1951 mit Robert Taylor und Peter Ustinov in den Hauptrollen gedrehte US-Film. Auch Bud Spencer hatte hier seine erste Statistenrolle. Auch wenn fast passend die das Kerndorf überrangende Söller Pfarrkirche Peter und Paul geweiht ist, bezieht sich unser Cache weder auf diese imposante Kirche, noch auf die biblische Geschichte sondern auf das wirtschaftliche Rückgrat der Gemeinde Söll: den Fremdenverkehr.
Geschichte Sölls: Kurz und bündig
Söll war über viele Jahrhunderte ein bäuerlich geprägtes Dorf. Bereits 1342 der Tiroler Landesfürstin Margarete Maultasch als "Morgengabe" geschenkt worden, kam es offiziell erst 1504 zu Tirol. Infolge der damals schlecht ausgebauten Verkehrswege blieb es dadurch aber auch von Kriegen verschont und lange Zeit in seinem Charakter als originales Bergdorf bis nach dem zweiten Weltkrieg erhalten.
Nun aber begann der radikale Wandel Sölls - sowohl was das Ortsbild als auch die wirtschaftliche Grundlage des Dorfes betraf. Durch die einzigartige Lage zwischen Hoher Salve und Wildem Kaiser gelang es,d en Tourismus als Standbein des Dorfes zu etablieren - entsprechend wurde das Ortsbild angepasst, Hotels wurden gebaut, und heute prägen mannigfaltige Geschäfte, Banken, Hotels, Ausgehmöglichkeiten, etc. das Straßenbild.
Zum Cache
Hier ist der Titel des Caches ruhig mehrdeutig zu nehmen: Einerseits soll er den Stellenwert des Tourismus in Tirol unterstreichen und somit den Wandel eines abgelegenen Bergdorfs zu einer Tourismusmetropole betonen. Andererseits weist er direkt auf die Örtlichkeit des Versteckes hin: An den angegebenen Koordinaten findet ihr einen überdimensionalen Wegweiser, der Euch zu (fast) allen wichtigen Einrichtungen im Dorf führt.

On the biblical quote
Quo vadis? is a quote which derives primarily from a biblical source, we can find it in John's Gospel (Joh 13;37). Furthermore, according to the legend, St. Peter encountered Christ en route to Rome and asked him "Domine quo vadis?" (Lord, whence headest thou?) - and was met with the response "Roman venio iterum crucifigi" (To Rome to be crucified once more). Following this, St. Peter turned around on the spot and was captured in Rome and crucified in turn.
This occasion reported in the apocryphic Acts of St. Peter was cinematographically converted into American film in 1951 starring Robert Taylor and Peter Ustinov. Bud Spencer noteworthily had his first role as an extra. Even though it is almost fitting that the core village of Söll is towered by the Church of St. Peter and Paul, there is no connection between this imposing church nor the biblical story and the cache. Instead the purpose of the cache highlights the main economic venture of Söll: tourism.
A brief history of Söll
For centuries Söll was a typical Tyrolese farmer's village. Having already been gifted as a "morning gift" to Tyrolese Countess Margarete Maultasch in 1342, it was not before 1504 that it officially became a part of Tyrol. Due to the scarce state of road infrastructure it was spared from the spoils of many wars and for a long while it remained in its character as an original mountainside village until after WW2.
Now however, Söll underwent a radical makeover - both concerning the general architectural heritage of the village and the main strand of economy. Due to its unique position between the Hohe Salve and Wilder Kaiser mountains it managed to establish a bustling tourist scene as its main economic venture. Accordingly, the architecture of the village was adapted, hotels were built and today various shops, banks, hotels and indeed night venues, etc. dominate the street view.
The Cache
Here one is gladly invited to take the cache title as a double entendre: On one hand it should underline the vanguard position of tourism to the economy of the Tyrol and hence stress the gradual change from a mountainside village to a metropolitan centre of tourism. On the other hand it is in close reference to the actual hiding place: At the header coordinates you are confronted with an over-dimensional signpost which should be able to guide you to (virtually) all important institutions in the village.
