After the very first geocache was hidden south-east of Portland in Oregon, USA, back on 3rd May, 2000, it didn’t take long, (the 18th May, 2000 to be precise), before Australia had its first geocache hide here in the Lane Cove National Park. The hide consisted of a white bucket with a lid and was buried in the ground.
To celebrate 15 fabulous years of geocaching fun, Geocaching NSW invites everyone to come together for a very special event, the anniversary of the placement of GC3E – Lane Cove.
Details are as follows:
Date: Sunday, 17th May, 2015
Location: Lane Cove National Park - Commandment Rock Picnic Area
Time: 11am to 2pm
Access: Vehicles can enter the park from Delhi Rd or Lane Cove Rd. The entry fee is $7 per vehicle (unless you have a current NPWS entry sticker). Alternatively, you can park outside the caravan park in Plassey Rd, Macquarie Park, and walk in approximately 800m to the event. For public transport information, visit www.transportnsw.info.
What to Bring: Please BYO all food and drink requirements for yourself. There are some BBQs available (bring your own wood). Unfortunately, there is no coffee shop/take away food available at this spot. It would be a good idea to bring folding chairs and/or a picnic rug for your comfort. Toilets are available nearby.
Photograph: The Official Event Group Photograph will be taken at 12:00pm so hope you can be there for that.
Events are a great way to meet new people and make new friends with a common interest, pick up the latest information on equipment, techniques and software and share stories about the latest caching adventure. You may even pick up a hint or two on those annoying DNFs.

On Saturday, 18th August, 2001, GeoMonkeys wrote the following “Didn’t Find It” cache log…..
14:45:Sunday August 19 2001. Alas, Lane cove cache is no more. I witnessed it first hand.
The rangers have removed even the empty container now. If I had been only a few minutes earlier, I would have been sitting at the cache when they arrived. As I appraoched along the nearest roadway I noticed a NPWS-4X4 parked in the trail entrance. This doesn't look good I thought to myself. So I cut across on another trail, and circled the site to a point where I could see the Ranger from a distance. He was at the cache location, with the bucket in hand, and it looked as though he was pushing dirt and leaves back into the hole the cache had come from. The ranger then headed out to his vehicle, and threw the container into the back.
I decided this was an expedient time to leave.
Farewell Lane Cove Cache!
A NPWS ranger removed the geocache due to it being located in a sensitive area of the park that contained the plant, Darwinia Biflora. This geocache was converted to a virtual one so players could continue to visit the home of geocaching in Australia.
