Le canal artificiel créé parallèlement au vieux Rhône utilise une grande partie du débit naturel disponible et laisse un débit relativement faible; ce n'est que lors des fortes crues, quand les aménagements se déchargent dans le lit historique pour écrêter la crue, que le débit du vieux Rhône revient à des niveaux plus importants. Ce changement de régime hydrologique a provoqué un assèchement des milieux rivulaires et une modification de biodiversité (flore, habitats alluviaux et faune piscicole en particulier).
D'autre part la modification des écoulements et du transport sédimentaire provoque un changement de la morphodynamique du cours d'eau.
Caution during floods the wetland becomes impractical
The artificial channel created parallel to the old Rhone uses much of the available natural flow and leaves a relatively low rate; it is only during heavy floods, when the arrangements are discharged in the historic bed to clip the flood, the flow rate of the old Rhône returns to higher levels. This change of hydrological regime caused a drying of riparian habitats and biodiversity change (flora, alluvial habitats and fish fauna in particular).
On the other hand the change of flow and sediment transport causes a change in the morphodynamics of the river.
