Pour les enfants, il consiste à accrocher un poisson de papier dans le dos de personnes dont on veut se moquer. « Poisson d’avril ! » est aussi l’exclamation que l’on pousse une fois qu’une des plaisanteries est découverte.
Les origines de la tradition du 1er avril ne sont pas certaines.
La plus vraisemblable fait remonter cette fête à 1564, lorsque Charles IX décida, par l’Edit de Roussillon, que la nouvelle année commencerait désormais le 1er janvier et non plus le 1er avril. « Voulons et ordonnons qu’en tous actes, registres, instruments, contracts, ordonnances, édicts, tant patentes que missives, et toute escripture privé, l’année commence doresénavant et soit comptée du premier jour de ce moys de janvier », stipulait l’article 3 du texte en ancien français.
En réponse à cette décision, les sujets du Roi les plus conservateurs décidèrent de se remettre de faux cadeaux et de se jouer des tours.
