Palm Island's First GC Traditional Cache

This Cache is Located on the top of Mt Bently.

you need to hike up to GZ or can be accessed by a 4WD. 

PALM ISLAND

Palm Island is an Aboriginal community located on Great Palm Island, also called by the Aboriginal name "Bwgcolman", an island on the Great Barrier Reef in North Queensland, Australia. 

Palm Island is made up of different areas including Butler Bay, The Ridge, The mission (Top End), The bottom End, The Farm and Back Farm. There is said to be anywhere between 2000 and 5000 people on the island, with most people living between Palm Island and Townsville.

Access to the Island is either by plane, ferry or barge. The ferry travels from Townsville on a Monday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday, with a quick turn around of 15 minutes.  Hinterland Aviation runs approximately 6 flights to and from Townsville Monday to Friday and the barge runs most days leaving from Halifax. Please do your researched before traveling to Palm Island.

Getting to the Cache

Following the beach road north from the jetty terminal takes you through the mission, past the pub and the hospital. Beyond this is Bottom End and then the Farm. If you continue along this road you come up to the Ambulance Station. Take a left at the junction and continue along this road until you get to the Dam. From the jetty to this point at the dam is approximately a 40 minute walk. (4km)

Now is the hard part, a 60 minute (approx 5km) uphill battle! Continue along the road up the hill. Once you make it up the first peak, the road continues along a small downward slope. You will then get to the fork in the road, continue along to the right and keep walking……..

Once you get to the ‘carpark’, it’s time to start looking…….
