LOCAL INFORMATION
Petersfield is an ancient market town originally built as a Norman 'new town' at the end of the 11th Century and is located in the Hampshire part of the South Downs National Park.
Petersfield Heath is an area of public land that is a short walk from the town centre. It consists of 69 acres of land with a beautiful 22 acre pond. The Heath is a Site of Importance for Nature Conservation (SINC) and has a rich heritage stretching back over 3,000 years. The Heath contains 21 Bronze Age barrows gaining it a site with Scheduled Ancient Monument status and providing one of the most important complex of burial mounds in southern England.
Heathland is an important, but declining, habitat in the South Downs National Park. Heaths are very rare habitats rich in wildlife and they’re also a fantastic open space for families to explore. But many people don’t realise that they’re under threat and would disappear completely if they aren’t actively managed.
The Friends of Petersfield Heath were formed in 1999 from local residents concerned about the future of the Heath. The group undertakes a wide programme of conservation tasks across the heath and is instrumental in preserving the Heath as an area of natural heathland, grassland, woodland and water for the enjoyment of all who use it.

The Serpent Trail
Petersfield Heath is at one end of the 65 mile Serpent Trail which passes through stunning heath and downland of Hampshire, Surrey and West Sussex to Haslemere.
Accessible trail
The heath has an easy access trail around the pond known as the boardwalk. There are also disabled car parking spaces that allow direct access to this trail.
Events
Each year the Heath sees history coming to life through the Secrets of the Heath event, a weekend of free family events celebrating the wildlife and history of heathland taking place on Petersfield Heath at the end of August each year. The event highlights the value and importance of heathland, past and present. The South Downs National Park has gets together with a group of partners; the Wildlife Trust, RSPB, National Trust, Amphibian and Reptile Conservation and Hampshire County Council and with support from Butser Ancient Farm, the Friends of Petersfield Heath and Petersfield Town to run this fun-filled weekend.
The event brings the history and wildlife of heathlands to life and will typically include: - medieval village - wildlife bioblitz - coracle boat - stone age man - bronze age man - medieval weaponry display - Norman falconry - Georgian highwaywoman - peasant storyteller - heathland reptiles - cows and sheep.
The annual taro fair is held on the 6th October each year. This event was originally a horse fair but is now a very popular funfair that is a focal event for the town.
Petersfield Museum and Gallery is open to the public from Tuesday to Saturday 10am to 4pm and has free admission.
TRAVELLING SUSTAINABLY
Petersfield railway station is on the Portsmouth Direct Line which runs between London (London Waterloo) and Portsmouth (Portsmouth Harbour railway station).
There are a number of buses that service the town from surrounding areas including: Number 17, 37, 38, 54, 67, 92 and 94.
