Geocache Description:

The Drybrook extention was built to carry the line from Mitcheldean Road Station, The Lea through to Drybrook and on to Cinderford, about 4.5 miles.




The result of an Act in 1871 the 4.5 mile stretch was to connect Cinderford with Mitcheldean Road Station and known as the Mitcheldean Road & Forest of Dean Junction Railway. However, after a number of difficulties the project was taken over by the GWR. The first section, about a mile, was completed in 1885 and the rest of the line was finished by 1907. The line from Drybrook through the Euroclydon Tunnel to Mitcheldean Road, although laid and complete, was never opened to traffic and was eventually taken up in 1917. It is said that the tunnel was used as a munitions dump during the wars.



Just up the track bed from here to the north is the Lea Bailey Light Railway which is trying to develop the area as an attraction. There is usually some activity there on a Sunday. There is also nice walking in the woods on both sides of the road particularly if you have Geo-hounds. Parking co-ordinates are provided for safe parking and access to the woods for walking.

Please take care when attempting this cache as the road can be occasionally busy; the 'unsuitable for dogs' is for the cache only.
