Imre Nagy (HUN Nagy Imre) was born in 1896 in this house. Imre Nagy graduated his school in Kaposvár, and a locksmith was his trade. In 1916 he fought in the Galician front in World War I, and got war prisoner in Russia. He got free from captivity in 1918 because he fought on sides of the Bolsheviks against admiral Kolchak's monarchist army in Siberia.
In 1921, he returned home to Kaposvar as a communist party worker, and later emigrated to the Soviet Union in 1929.
He was back in 1944 when the Red Army occupied Hungary.
He was elected Prime Minister in 1953. He disagreed with the bolshevik tyranny and violent collectivization of agriculture. Therefore he had to resign in 1955. The 1956 oct. 23 anticommunist revolution overcame, and he became prime minister again. Initially he wanted to correct the mistakes of the communist regime, but after the victory of the revolution the Soviet army intervened and Imre Nagy was head of the War of Independence. True, he was a socialist, but primarily patriot, therefore he fought for independence against Red Army.
Nagy Imre in vain asked the free Western countries for help. The Soviet superiority soon defeated the revolution and freedom war.
In this way the War of Independence has failed and the Bolsheviks took vengeance on the Hungarian nation and leaders of revolution.
He also was sentenced to death in 1958. june. 25th and he had to die the next morning.
The court proceedings were conducted in secret, and all was announced only after the events.
Imre Nagy was legally rehabilitated in 1989.
