O concelho de Nordeste, tem uma área de 101 Km2, com um perímetro total de 53 Km, o seu território de forma aproximadamente retangular tem um comprimento máximo N/S de 9 Km e W/E de 15 Km. Tem cerca de 5600 habitantes.
Em termos comparativos o concelho representa 14 % da área e 4 % da população de São Miguel.
Até 2002 o concelho foi constituído por 7 freguesias, passando a 9 freguesias com a subdivisão da freguesia de Nordestinho em 3: Santo António, São Pedro e Lomba da Fazenda.
A região tem um relevo bastante acidentado, interrompido por cursos de água bem marcados, que constitui geralmente a divisão entre as várias freguesias.
O concelho tem a particularidade de os pequenos núcleos urbanos de carácter rural estarem concentrados junto à costa, numa altitude entre os 100m e os 200m. Apesar de todas as freguesias confrontarem com o oceano, a costa escarpada e de difícil acesso, tem como consequência a muito fraca relação da população com o mar, nomeadamente a pesca, e o acentuado cariz rural e campestre do concelho.
Neste local é possível observar a forte erosão marítima a que algumas partes da ilha estão sujeitas.
The Nordeste municipality, has an area of 101 km2, with a total perimeter of 53 km, it’s a territory of a rectangular shape with a maximum length N/S 9 Km and W/E of 15 km. It has about 5600 inhabitants.
The municipality it’s 14% of the area and 4% of the population the island.
By 2002 the municipality was composed of 7 parishes, from the 9 parishes with the subdivision of Nordestinho parish in 3: St. Anthony, St. Peter and Lomba da Fazenda.
The region has a very rugged relief, interrupted by well-marked streams, which usually are the division between the various parishes.
The municipality is composed of the small urban centres of rural character which are concentrated along the coast, at an altitude between 100m and 200m.
Despite the fact that all the parishes face the ocean, the rugged coastline and difficulty to access the coast, has a consequence the population is little linked with sea activities, like fishing, but has a predominant rural character.
