Geocache Description:

War Memorial cache #66 We shall remember them ~ High Spen, Gateshead.

There are literally thousands of War memorials around the country. WW1 Memorials were usually raised through public subscription to remember those that gave the ultimate sacrifice. 2014 was the centenary of the start of the First World War, so it was about time there was a series dedicated to War Memorials. There is an un-numbered series in Scotland called, “Lest we forget” and another we have learned about called “Poppies on Parade”. We will gladly add any of these to the War Memorial Series, just ask for a number. The name of this series We Shall remember them, was chosen from the very moving poem “For the Fallen” by Laurence Binyon. It is well worth searching out and reading.”

ABOUT THE MEMORIAL

St. Patrick's Church, Lintzford Lane. In churchyard.

A sword carved in half relief hangs by its strap around the top of the cross. The upper section shows WW1 dedication names with the lower section showing WW2 names Memorial stands in graveyard type plot with a low stone edge in front of the church. The inscriptions are engraved on darker grey granite panels each 2 feet 4 inches high x 1 foot 4 inches wide set into each face of the pedestal, the upper panels for the 1914-18 war and the lower panels for the 1939-45 war. In front of the kerb, a low extension has been created to take the name of a man killed in Afghanistan.
