Remembering those bygone days -- The Simcoe Drive-in Theatre.
The Simcoe Drive-in Theatre opened it's gates in May of 1950 much to the vigorous objections of the three local movie-house owners. Located on lands north of Hwy#3, a little west of Norfolk St. and bordering on the south edge of Sutton's Pond. Â At the time, the owner Mr Leask boasts that the drive-in will be completely landscaped so that it will be one of the most attractive in the province. Â The large screen was located on the south side of the lands with playground equipment provided for children in front of the screen. Â Pony Rides were even offered at 10 cents. Two shows nightly, starting at dusk, rain or clear. Â Dollar nights on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. Â That was, each car was a dollar regardless the number of occupants. Regular rates on Friday and Saturday. The drive-in lasted about a decade before closing. Â By 1965 there was talk of building Simcoe's second mall on the vacant lands but it never materialized. Â The land sat vacant till about the mid 80's at which time the construction of the Mill Pond Estate condos took place. Â The condos are still standing here today.
